I received an advanced copy of this book for free from the Publisher in exchange of an honest review. This in no way affects of opinion of the book or the content of my review.
There’s just something about Jill Shalvis’ books that you can’t help but pick one up at your local bookstore whenever you find yourself perusing one. Her books are always such great reads that she has become an automatic buy for me. When I found out she was writing a new series after her Lucky Harbor series ended, I was both excited and sad. Excited because more great stories, more strong and funny female characters and more hot men. ;) Sad because it is the end of an era. I started the Lucky Harbor books sometime last year and I binged them all in just a few weeks. So yes, I’m sad to see them end.
Second Chance Summer is as the title suggests, a story about a second chance at love between the main characters, Aidan and Lily. Aidan is the reformed town bad-boy who risks his life daily putting out fires and scaling mountain sides to rescue in distress climbers. The only thing he regrets more in his life is letting Lily walk away all those years ago without getting some answers first.
Lily had no plans of ever coming back to Cedar Ridge, but she’s in desperate need of a job and there just happens to be an opening at the best resort back home. But it also happens to be owned by one devastatingly handsome Aidan Kincaid. That won’t stop her though, she’s determined to get her act together even if it means she has to interact with Aidan at some point in time.
But while Aidan is accommodating and all, he needs answers and she’s the only one who can give them to him. He’s let Lily walk out of his life once before, he’s not going to let her go again so easily this time. He knows there’s something there and Lily does too. She just has some secrets she’s been keeping and a whole lot of healing to do before she’s able to be herself again and not be burdened by the past.
Along with out main couple, there’s also glimpses of the infamous Kincaid clan and their great family dynamic. The irritating, overbearing/overprotective older brothers and the little sister was such a heartwarming addition to the story. It also sets the scene for their future stories, which I’m very much looking forward to reading.
As usual with Shalvis’ writing, she really does a good job at painting such vivid pictures of the scenery. I’ve never been to Colorado but she makes me want to so badly. I’m not even a person who likes the cold, per se, but I want to be where these people are because it sounds so welcoming and cozy and don’t forget to throw in any one of her heroes whose kisses are hot enough to melt all the ice in that region.
Simply lovely writing with a heartwarming story of a second chance at love in spite of all life throws at these characters and a couple of hunky guys thrown in for good measure with some great dialogue and banter.
