I’d like to introduce a new feature here at Fic Talk called Quote Unquote! I can’t seem to have a review every week so Lisa and I have been thinking of other features to take the place on my off weeks. Quote Unquote will spotlight quotes and passages we love from books new and old.
This week, my most loved quotes are from Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward.
Zsadist: “You know, this was a hell of a lot easier when you were out cold in the back of that truck.”
Phury: “That was you?”
Zsadist: “You think it was Santa Claus or some shit?”
I know the following is long, but I just couldn’t bear to separate any of it. It deserves to be posted in its entirety.
Bella looked the paper. In a child’s uneven block letters were three words:
I LOVE YOU
Her lips flattened tight as her eyes stung. The handwriting got wavy and then disappeared.
“Maybe you can’t read it,” he said in a small voice. “I can do it over.”
She shook her head. “I can read it just fine. It’s… beautiful.”
“I don’t expect anything back. I mean… I know that you don’t… feel that way for me anymore. But I wanted you to know. It’s important that you knew. And if there’s any chance we could be together… I can’t stop my job with the Brotherhood. But I can promise that I’ll be so much careful with myself–” He frowned and stopped talking. “Shit. What am I saying? I promised myself I wouldn’t put you in this position–”
She crushed the paper to her heart, then launched herself at him, hitting his chest so hard he stumbled back. As his arms came around her with hesitation, as if he didn’t have any idea what she was doing or why, she wept openly.
In all her preparations for this meting, the one thing she had never considered was that the two of them might have some sort of future.
When he tilted up her chin and looked down at her she tried to smile, but the crazy hope she felt was too heavy and joyous a burden.
“I didn’t mean to make you cry–”
“Oh, God…Zsadist, I love you.”
His eyes flared so wide, his brows nearly hit his hairline. “What…?”
“I love you.”
“Say that again.”
“I love you.”
“Again…please,” he whispered. “I need to hear it…again.”
“I love you…”
“I was dead until you found me, though I breathed. I was sightless, though I could see. And then you came…and I was awakened.” – Zsadist
“We came running when your noggin cracked into the floor. Put ‘er there, daddy-o. Can I teach the little bugger how to fight?” – Rhage to Zsadist
“Yeah, well, I could have done without the passing-out part. And that whole bawling-my-eyes-red routine, too. Definitely could have lost that one. Christ.” Zsadist to Bella
*sigh* I’m sure there’s even more to love, but I didn’t want to post too many. Zsadist and his book, Lover Awakened, are my absolute favorites from The Black Dagger Brotherhood series. So much so that my third Kindle is named Zsadist II (Ramon’s screen crapped out on me and Zsadist I wouldn’t connect to 3G so he had to be returned). When I first mentioned this feature to Lisa I immediately thought of Zsadist and his words to Bella, “I was dead until you found me, though I breathed. I was sightless, though I could see. And then you came…and I was awakened.” and the scene where she read the words that he loved her. After having been through so much, Zsadist finally found the happiness he deserved and longed for with Bella. I’m tearing up here people. No lie, Lover Awakened stabbed me in my little black heart.
Have you read Lover Awakened? What’s your favorite quote?
